Children Cancerfree Foundation

Last year I became a first-time mom to the most beautiful little girl. Delivery was rough, and Riley spent the first night of her life in an incubator. Thankfully she recovered quickly and is now a carefree, happy and healthy baby – like all children deserve to be. I cannot imagine my life without her. So it breaks my heart when I hear or read about children who are not carefree, happy and healthy.

Childhood cancer rates have been rising slightly for the past few decades. After accidents, cancer is the second leading cause of death in children ages 1 to 14. Three in four children can be cured, but one in four cannot. Kika (Children Cancer-free Foundation) uses donations for:

  • Scientific research into curing childhood cancer
  • Improving the quality of treatments
  • Reducing side effects after treatments
  • Supporting the Princess Máxima Center (the largest research and care center for childhood cancer in Europe)
  • and to educate about childhood cancer.

My husband and 2 co-workers are running the 2019 New York City Marathon to raise funds for Kika, the Children Cancer-free Foundation. This is their campaign:

Most of our friends and family do not speak Dutch and the accepted payment methods on the campaign website are limited, so we’re also accepting Paypal donations. You can send your donation (any amount!) directly to, and we’ll transfer it to the campaign using iDeal.

Important: to avoid having to charge VAT, you’re not purchasing any goods. However, we’d love to send you a small token of appreciation if you donate 21 Euro or more (if your shipping address differs from your billing address, you can email

Why is research into childhood cancer so important?

Every year, more than 550 children in the Netherlands develop cancer. At this moment, 75% of these children are cured, but sadly, 1 in 4 still die from the disease. Cancer is the number 1 cause of death by disease in children. We have to do better, and we can do better. Our goal is to raise the percentage of cured children to 95%.

What does KiKa do?

KiKa is the only charity in the Netherlands that funds research on all forms of childhood cancer. KiKa raises funds for innovative research and other activities in the field of childhood cancer, aimed at less pain, more cure and a better quality of life. Furthermore, KiKa focuses on education on childhood cancer.

The Princess Máxima Center

There are many different forms of childhood cancer. Because each form occurs rarely, specific knowledge is needed for every treatment.  Until recently, research and treatment were carried out at several university hospitals. Due to this fragmented approach, it was difficult to gain experience and train specialists. Now, care and research for all childhood cancer patients in the Netherlands are concentrated within one center: the Princess Máxima Center for pediatric oncology. This is the largest research and care center for childhood cancer in Europe. KiKa is the main financial supporter of the Princess Máxima Center.

Support KiKa now and help to fight childhood cancer!
